There are many types of addiction, from drugs, to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia, to nail-biting, teeth grinding, and sugar addiction in all its many forms. There are many ways to help the addict's mind finally to overcome its problems. One thing is always the same with hypnotism: you must truly desire to get rid of the addiction for hypnosis to work. That's because "all hypnosis is self-hypnosis." Your true intention is the starting point. Hypnotism is not a magic bullet that can stop an addiction in its tracks. A hypnotist can never rescue unwilling addicts from themselves just by using hypnosis. As an addict you must always be deeply involved and willing to change. So, sending your spouse or teenager along to “get fixed” by the hypnotist just will not work. Smoking Take smoking addiction: it’s a heavy-duty addiction, which is encouraged by people’s social habits and the tobacco industry’s aggressive advertising. To be successful in giving up the habit you must first have made a definite decision to quit smoking, and you have already reduced your intake of nicotine. When you approach the hypnotist, you have a true desire to quit smoking, backed up by positive action. The hypnotist will help you move from the desire stage to the commitment stage. You will get help in re-programming your habits and responses, and will be sent away with a clear program to follow in the difficult first days after quitting smoking. Obesity Clients suffering obesity come for hypnotism to get help in shedding those stubborn pounds that won't go away. That can be fairly easy to fix, providing the client is willing to put in the hard work needed to conquer obesity. Much harder is the task for those people seeking weight-loss, who are very many pounds heavier than nature intended. They often eat quite modestly and have been dieting more than half their life without success! Moving up and down, and up and down on the scales, with a weight-loss of just a few pounds that swiftly go back on, has been a very frustrating experience. People with these and other eating disorders may often suffer from a lack of self-esteem and also receive nasty criticism from people who do not feel sympathetic. Persuading the subconscious that it’s safe to eat normally is not the point. Hypnotism helps clients discover the deep reason why they are having so much trouble: what experiences, embedded in their subconscious minds, may have turned them off normal eating and on to anorexia or bulimia. Such issues are complex in origin and may go back a very long way. When the fundamental problem has been resolved, the stress fades and the eating disorder usually goes away for ever on its own. Some hypnotists are specially trained to help substance abusers. Like the challenge of eating or smoking habits, addiction to narcotics is partly habitual. But it is more. The chemistry of the brain is seriously altered as people seek ever-increasing highs to satisfy their craving. Success comes for those who truly want to give up and who stay the course of specialized clinical hypnotism. Bad Habits Addiction comes in other forms: nail biting, teeth grinding, pulling out hair, and habitual lateness to work or school, are examples. Wherever there is personal stress caused by our own activity or by outside forces, resulting in our functioning badly, hypnotism can usually help. Nothing we provide is "one-size-fits-all," and this therapy is never a cure-all. Professional hypnotists should know when to refer you to medical specialists for their assistance, but we invite you to check us out first to see what help with your problem. Certified Chicago master hypnotist Peter Watson Jenkins works with clients wishing to benefit from therapy for non-substance abuse addictions, including anorexia nervosa, and bulimia. If he cannot help you personally, he will seek someone who can.
